Notes on Mexico in 1883 : ADS.

Journal recording Bancroft's visit to Mexico and return trip to San Francisco, September 1, 1883 - March 17, 1884, in company with his daughter Kate and his assistant, A.C. Cabezut. Made in response to a life-long desire to observe Mexico and its people, about which he had been writing for several years. Gives his impressions of the leading figures in the country, and the development and content of Mexican libraries and archives, particularly the Archivo General de la Nación. Contains a copy of a detailed report on the latter institution prepared by Justino Rubio of Mexico City, November 3, 1883.

Ignacio Manuel Altamirano [1834-1893] was a Mexican poet and novelist of Nahua heritage. He joined Benito Juarez in opposition to Maximilian and played a part in the subsequent reconstruction of the republic. Altamirano served as representative to the national congress, as Supreme Court justice, and as president of the Sociedad Mexicana de Geografía y Estadística.
